This trial in France could set an important precedent for foreing governments exporting their censorship beyond their borders, to curb freedom of the press.<\/p>\n

The Azerbaijani Laundromat is a complex money-laundering operation and slush fund that handled $2.9 billion over a two-year period through four shell companies registered in the UK.<\/em><\/p>\n

The scheme was uncovered through a joint investigation by Berlingske<\/a> (Denmark), OCCRP, The Guardian<\/a> (UK), S\u00fcddeutsche Zeitung<\/a> (Germany), Le Monde<\/a> (France), Tages-Anzeiger<\/a> and Tribune de Gen\u00e8ve<\/a> (Switzerland), De Tijd<\/a> (Belgium), Novaya Gazeta<\/a> (Russia), Dossier<\/a> (Austria), Atlatszo.hu<\/a> (Hungary), Delo<\/a> (Slovenia), RISE Project<\/a> (Romania), Bivol<\/a> (Bulgaria), Aripaev<\/a> (Estonia), Czech Center for Investigative Journalism<\/a> (Czech Republic), and Barron’s<\/a> (US).<\/em><\/p>\n

This project is part of the Global Anti-Corruption Consortium<\/a>, a collaboration started by OCCRP and Transparency International.<\/em><\/p>\n
